And wrapping up the week with a curious item….
A few days back, several European sites reported the uncovering of the buyer behind the winning $147,000 bid for Peter Eastgate’s 2008 WSOP Main Event championship bracelet, identifying the purchaser as Scottish multimillionaire Willie Haughey. Haughey is known to both dabble in poker and to be a previous high-profile donator to UNICEF, the charity chosen by Eastgate as the recipient of the auction’s funds. That seemed to be the genesis for the original EkstraBladet piece.
Except, it doesn’t seem to add up, despite a large number of poker outlets jumping on the news, including this Poker News Daily piece. Lance Bradley in this piece at Bluff called the evidence in question, noting that there was no obvious connection between the Haughey donation to UNICEF in a photo in the piece and the actual Eastgate bracelet auction.
And, it looks as though Bradley may have been spot on. A recent check of the Ekstrabladet.dk site shows no evidence of any story mentioning a “Haughey”, which is what typically happens when a story contains incorrect information and has to be pulled down. For now, let’s just say that the buyer of Eastgate’s bling is still unknown, despite it definitely not being Tony G.
