How to be a zen-master of poker goodness
Ok, so you want to be a totally kick-ass poker player who is presented an all-season’s pass to poker Valhalla when you kick the bucket? Well, sonny-Jim – we gotta talk… Papa got a few tips for you if you really want to get to the top. In order to hold the title of being a totally kick-ass poker player you better bring your A-game (and if you have a really pimpin’ goatee that will also help – now that’s real dedication). Now we had better discuss how you’re going to assume the illustrious status of a true-blue poker legend. Firstly: the old adage is true. You have to practise, practise and practise and then practise some more. Poker is a delicious mixture of luck and skill. Think of the following analogy: poker is like a drop-dead gorgeous woman who calls you ‘puffin’ even though you haven’t changed out of your PJ’s for weeks. Like Hugh Hefner said, ‘I have about 100 pairs of pajamas. I like to see people dressed comfortably.’ Sensible man – I like him. Secondly: take some time to learn from the best; these are the Zen masters of poker cool and they could teach you a thing or two, Jimmy. Doyle Brunson is one of those old-timers that deserve Respect (with a capital R). Born in 1933, Doyle Brunson has a Masters Degree in Business from Hardin-Simmon University, proving once again that the old goats can be deep pools of knowledge to still-wet-behind-the-ears noobs. And lastly – don’t mob the man that falls in a river (the card). It’s bad form and no one likes a sore loser. Poker is about having fun and testing your mettle against other lovers of the game. If you play your game right, you too could be basking in happiness, knowing that you’re the top dog. Good luck little chickens and may the force be with you!
